Aqua Soil Basics for Planted Tanks

Tropica Aquarium Soil

Aqua soil is a baked, nutrient-rich substrate made for planted aquariums. It lowers pH slightly, softens water and feeds root-heavy plants for months.

How much do you need?

For a flat layout, plan on a depth of about 5 cm at the front rising to 8–10 cm at the back. Multiply the tank’s length × width (in cm) × average depth and divide by 1000 to get litres of soil.

Expect an ammonia release

Fresh aqua soil releases ammonia for the first few weeks. Do frequent water changes during this period and add livestock only after the tank has cycled.

Layering

A thin layer of power sand or root tabs under the soil gives long-term nutrition. Keep it away from the front glass so it stays hidden.

Pair aqua soil with good lighting and CO2 and you will see strong, healthy growth from carpeting plants and stem plants alike.
