How to Choose the Right Canister Filter

SUNSUN HW-302 External Canister Filter

A canister filter is the workhorse of most planted and community aquariums. Picking the right one comes down to three things: flow rate, media capacity and ease of maintenance.

Match flow to tank volume

As a rule of thumb, aim for a filter rated at 4–6 times your tank volume per hour. A 100 litre tank is well served by a filter rated around 500–600 L/h. Remember that rated flow drops once the canister is packed with media and hoses are attached.

Media is what really filters

Most canisters use three or four trays. A good order is coarse sponge first, then biological media such as ceramic rings or sintered glass, and fine floss last to polish the water. Chemical media like activated carbon is optional and best used for short periods.

Think about maintenance

Look for a priming button, quick-release valves and easy-to-open clips. A filter that is easy to service is one you will actually clean on time.
